We did out first version of Yokomono-white at in 2007 Podewil for a one of colaboratuion consert  with Hassan Khan
The idea for ‘Yokomono White’ was made for the Avanto festival in Helsinki but never realized nor tested.
“Yokomono white” is just old turntables with paper tubes and a pin using our own Yokomono records

Staaplaat Soundsystem plays Maritime Rites – Wasserkorso, by Alvin Curran with 16 sirens

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Invited by Netwerk for the Festival: StraatHerrie (literally translated ‘Street noise’) we did our concert in Aalst and used 16 sirens. (written for shiphorns)
I got the hand written score from Alvin and had it transcribed and then saved to Midi, we played it as DMX (with a self programed Max patch)
It worked very well.
We could not really tune the sirens to tones for if we took a low tone , the volume was just as low.
But we had different models and differences in distance to have variation.
It was played on Werfplein (the town square)
.
The public response was very strong , first people came to ask if there was a reason and if they could see our permit.
Then local bar and shop owners came explain to us that we were bad for business and in the end someone trashed our recording set up (so we mis the last part).
I can not wait to do it again

AWAKENING WOODS – KLANKENBOS SUMMER EXPO

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

20-07-12 till 26-08-12 Klankenbos NEERPELT

Klankenbos in the context of Manifesta 9 Musica organises a summer exhibit presenting a new and permanent  installation COMPOSED NATURE.

composed nature21 copy

Vibrant trees are the focus the of the Dutch  Composed Nature installation by staalplaat Soundsystem and Lola landscape architects. An interactive installation brings a series of motorized trees shaking causing artificial noise fields. The installation is formed by a matrix of trees on which vibrating motors are mounted and controlled via a DMX dimmer pack connected to a computer. The dimmer controls the voltage per tree and thus the frequency and severity of the vibration, creating artificial noise fields.
Composed Nature is a sensitive but powerful tool that allows visitors to play different compositions within the trees. In this way the forest becomes a public playable instrument. A permanent version is now installed in the Kankenbos, Neerplet, BE,  a public forest with a collection of open-air sound installations that is unique in Europe.

The installation Composed Nature, commissioned by CBK Dordrecht for the Urban Explorers Festival in 2011, began as a collaboration between LOLA landscape architects and Staalplaat Soundsystem as part of ongoing research for Composed City, which examines potential overlaps between sound art and landscape architecture.
A co-production of Musica, Domain Dommelhof and Z33 – Art in the Open Space
Z33 Art in the Open Space is supported by the Fund for Cultural Infrastructure of the Flemish Community

WANKING ON WEIRD SET UP FESTIVAL

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

staalplaat soundsystem made a very simple sound installation:
a set up with 4 coffee machines at  DOK-Gent, Belgium.
4 electronic valves control the water.
4 sequencers control the valves.

This is a remake of Sweet Sissy and the Ballroom Hiss that we did in 2002 In vooruit Gent where we used coffee machines , but there it wend al wrong and we flooded the place and blew the fuses.

“Wanking on Weird Setups Fest” is a festival that celebrates out of the ordinary audio setups. Kapotski invites musicians and sound artists to build sound installations that fit within 1 square meter. The installations play autonomous. The only control they have is an on/off button. No concert, no performance: only Setup!

Staalplaat Soundsystem in residence at LACE

Staalplaat installation video

A video of the installation, made for LACE  during our recidency to stay up to April 15

Staalplaat performance video

For this performance we were using “everyday electronic junk” scavenged from thrift stores and donations, staalplaat soundsystem fashioned new “orchestra” of “sound machines” controlled by self-build sequencers. All sounds come from the machines, for example, we stuck copper cable to the analogue monitors collecting the static field.

Our Teen workshop at LACE

In the workshops staalplaat soundsystem show participating teens that fancy japanese devises or expensive instruments are not at all needed to make great music-instead they will demonstrate that all you really need can easily be found in everyones own kitchen or cellar, if combined with a little bit of research and some playful modification. The end of the workshop results in a joint performance on stage.
Work in progres video

LACE hosts Dutch sound artist collective Staalplaat Soundsystem for a 10 day residency 20 Feb. – 1 March 2012. Within the current mood of worshipping the latest technology in media art, Staalplaat Soundsystem provides a breath of fresh air, reminding us of the 100-year tradition of noise-making machines, in which “mad” inventors and various kinds of artists operating in the margins of the art world meet. During their residency Staalplaat members Geert-Jan Hobijn and Carlo Crovato will construct a site specific, interactive sound installation that will also serve as the focal point for a participatory sound performance.

Using “everyday electronic junk” scavenged from thrift stores and donations, Hobijn and Crovato will fashion new “sound machines” that will be controllable by the audience via mobilephones. As the residency proceeds the artists will create and add more machines to an ever-growing installation in LACE’s main gallery space. In the final phase of the residency they will re-locate the installation to the storefront space and set it up so that LACE visitors and the general public can conduct the “orchestra” via their mobile phone both inside and outside from the Walk of Fame.
They will also lead a two-day youth workshop, culminating in a concert.

SUPPORT
This project is supported, in part, by public funds from the Netherlands Cultural Services (New York), in partnership with the Dutch Centre for International Cultural Activities (SICA); Music Center, the Netherlands; Netherlands Theatre Institute; and the Dutch Fund for the Performing Arts. Additional funds have been provided by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Mondriaan Fund.

Architone-Yokomono-pro @ Timelab Gent

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Yokomono-Pro is a car horn concert performed by vehicles moving through a city. Each city and each type of vehicle has its own tone and each combination results in a different concert. The project was developed and written as a commission by the International Sonic Residency 2008 for The KHOJ Artists’ Association in New Delhi and was presented one year later at the India Art Summit. In New Delhi we focused on the traffic and the amazing amount of noise it produces. One of the most prominent noisemakers is the three-wheel taxi, which uses its horn very frequently in situations where we would use our indicators, headlights or mirrors. Taxis are the most recognisable means of transport here, playing a dominant role in the city’s soundscape. We arranged for the collaboration of thirty so-called ‘tuck tuck’ taxis and operated their horns via remote by means of transmitters. By playing this ‘taxi horn choir’ in combination with spatial manoeuvres an urban sound choreography was created. Yokomono-pro has also been performed at the Transmediale in Berlin and at TodaysArt in The Hague.
