| a
composition for Nova huta
An open-air machine composition
will be constructed and performed in the main square in the
centre of Nota Huva, Poland. The machine orchestra will employ
construction machines such as cement mixers, pneumatic drills
and stompers, as well as seven sirens composition and is designed
to resonate with sounds dominating the citys everyday
soundscape.
The project is based on Staalplaats research on sound
in cities and the composition and control of the streaming of
audio information through urban environments. The composition
represents an attempt to write a score that echoes and responds
to the chaos of city sounds. It will transform what is generally
perceived as the citys background noise into an element
contributing to the sound of the machine composition.
This project is based on the will to research the real sounds
of a city. The project must be a program that composes and controls
the streaming of information of our own environment.
The city lives and moves. It is constantly under construction,
creating urban noise. This noise transforms in to the music
of city life. The music is present, uniformly around the entire
city but can be more massed in definite places.
The city reacts to any event or chaos by notes, whistles, sounds
and sirens.
In this project we want to write the score to end this city
chaos. We want to write a program for sounding machines, which
respond and control the above chaos - fire, police, ambulance
sirens and other. For this project we want to use a public space
in the city, an area in which we could set up our orchestra
that will play a score from indicated machines. To transform
the city into an a sonic art share where we will give another
value to events of a real city. To use public space of the city
for this musical experiment.
The result will be an open-air show on a square : With a brass
band and the use of 7 small sirens, turn them to frequencies
close to that of the band so that the frequencies will start
to shift and interfere.
Two siren mobiles (police, fire etc.) approach the square at
high speed, slow down when they reach the square and circle
the square with the band, then they must leave at high speed.
We will use just the sirens plus small instruments and a small
sound system ( in the form of boom cars), here we want a helicopter
to come from high in a straight line down.
Hang low above the square so that the big space becomes small
and here I want 2 siren mobiles to pas the square from two direction
and the helicopter will stay until we order him to leave.
We want to use;
I want to set up 7 small sirens that I can control by voltage.
I want to use a 4 siren mobiles (police fire etc.)
one brass band
one helicopter
and some of my own instruments
6 cement mixers
plus some boom cars
6 motorcycles
it would be good to get pile drivers
stompers (used to flatten sand)
